Shadow Cast is the first song from our currently in production second LP and is complemented by our debut music video!
Created by our multi-talented bassist Ryan Quarterman and aided by the equally multi-talented Martin Child of Oxford super band the August List, it brings to life the emotional resonance of a song that charts the aftermath of the death of a true friend.
While one song cannot hope to capture the depth of feeling that is being experienced by all those affected it was for me both cathartic and healing to co-write this song.
Garry had come to visit at the cottage we were living in last spring and during the course of the evening played a beautifully shaped and crafted piece of music on the resonator guitar that immediately put me in the mind and heart space to contribute lyrics.
His refrain ‘Just another rolling stone’ had multiple meanings for me in that moment and it was a case of sitting down and quickly writing how I felt while listening to him play it over a few times. The ‘chorus’ lyrics took a few more days of dropping into thought as I knew it had to really define the song.
When we laid it down as a guitar and vocal in the studio we had a few ideas about how the arrangement & instrumentation might develop but it sounded so complete that we added only the beautiful soaring swell of Ben’s violin and Richard’s harmonium chords.
So Shadow Cast is the first chapter of the bands next musical journey, a journey we look forward to sharing with you over the coming months on stage and on record!
Shadow Cast is available on Spotify, iTunes, Apple Music, Google Play, Amazon, Rdio, Deezer, Tidal, YouTube, Microsoft Groove, MediaNet…
‘An oft heard phrase in the islands that refers to the fact that things will happen when they happen, not before or after and hence there is little point worrying otherwise!’
‘An epic song by The Great Western Tears reported to be appearing on their second LP’
This is the true tale of how I met two of the greatest friends of my life on the tiny island of Wayalaila long far ago in the mists of Fiji time.
Plied with an endless supply of peppery brown Kava fuel we laughed and talked our way in to each others hearts, and there we would continue to live, though hemispheres would stand between us in times to come. This is the start of the story that took me to the Great Western Tiers and on to the Great Western Tears and beyond. One of the most influential crossroads of my spirit journey. Enjoy!
Time has come to team back up with master producer Richard Neuberg and begin the second phase of the bands journey in to the mystic.
Garry and Dava will be spending the day at Strawhouse studio on Monday the 14th August recording the acoustic tracks for the next record.
Feverish work continues with the band in preparation for tracking the bigger songs in the autumn. We are a little excited about sharing this set of songs with you all when the time is right, Fiji time that is!
As well as making some acoustic forays with the Tales from Tallows material, we have just played a set at Cornbury festival with a special extended band line up. We’ll be taking this full band show to BBC Countryfile live on August 6th and Towersey Folk festival on August 28th.
The set featured mostly new material written for our second LP which will begin production in the near future back at Strawhouse studios.
‘Let it storm’ is a bold statement that see’s us exploring darker folk landscapes.. Watch and Enjoy!
We’d like to extend a warm farewell and debt of gratitude to both Ian Clark (Drums) And Rich Jones (Bass) who have both left the band during the winter. They were the bands first formidable rhythm section who joined us as we set out on our gigging journey from summer 2015. Ian had been with us behind the scenes from the start as we worked on songs that would see the light of day firstly on our EP and more recently on our album Tales From Tallows. We wish them both well.
We are moving into a new season of live shows acoustically, buoyed greatly by the inclusion of Ben Heaney on Violin. Ben brought great light to the tracks he played on the album and has been hard at work learning the new set! You can see him in action in the live video below of Hang my hat.
Plans are afoot to have a full band on occasion for some of the festival dates and look forward to catching you at a gig soon…
